My Favorite Plant

I have so many favorite plants in the garden it is hard to choose. But if I must I would pick Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' commonly known as ‘Black-eyed Susan’. It’s average height is 80cm. with a 70cm spread. I have always loved to see yellow in the garden. Christopher Lloyd, in his new book “Color for Adventurous Gardeners” says yellow is cheerful and stimulating. The color of sunlight, it lifts the spirits and livens up dull areas in the garden. ‘Goldsturm’ was also named Perennial Plant of the Year for 1999. Put together with Monarda ‘Blaustrumpf’, which has violet-purple flowers, you can have a spectacular combination for the mid to late summer garden. White is another color that goes well with clumps of ‘rubeckias’. Tanacetum parthenium, ‘Feverfew’ is a great combination as well as Achillea ptarmica ‘Boule de Neige’. The achillea blooms over a long period of time and has milky white flowers. These plants also make excellent cut flowers. Shrubs of white “Abbotswood” potentilla brighten up the night and soften the colors in the beds. These shrubs also bloom in the spring and again later in the season.

I like to plant with all seasons in mind. Spring and early summer have a lot to offer for most of us but to be able to extend the season into fall and even winter makes the garden even more special. Rudbeckias grace the garden with their splashes of color well into late fall. I usually leave the stems standing throughout the winter as the birds are often seen pecking at the seedheads. This plant even fills up the spaces in spring with its wonderful foliage. Cutting back some of the flowering stems during their growing season encourages bushier growth and more flowering. I like to layer my cuts so there are shorter stems in the front and full stems in the middle. This strengthens the clump.

I once had someone come to the garden who looked out and said she never would have had yellow in the garden but after seeing my ‘Black-eyed Susan’s’ she was definitely going to add that to her color scheme. Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' is definitely a favorite of mine and I cannot imagine my garden without it.
